Near the end of the war, Resurrection church held a service of reconciliation, and members of the congregation were asked to come forward and write sins of their country upon this cross. Later, when government forces came to the church to arrest Bishop Gomez, they did not find him, but did take this cross with them.
The soldiers must have considered the cross as evidence against the bishop and the parish. They never destroyed it; the church believes it must have spoke uncomfortably to the men in the barracks that housed it.
Finally, with the war over, the bishop requested its return. With prodding from the US Ambassador, that happened.
Incidentally, the bishop escaped the country and ended up in Milwaukee until the end of the war.
